Discovering the Power of Community and Faith in the Journey of Recovery
Have you ever paused to ask yourself what truly sustains you, especially in your journey toward recovery? Whether you’re overcoming addiction, healing from abuse, or trying to mend the wounds of abandonment, the search for what keeps you going is deeply personal—and profoundly important. As you read on, you may discover new perspectives and insights that could help you find strength and hope along the way.
Let’s consider the story of Elijah and the widow in 1 Kings 17, perhaps in ways we haven’t before. The key observation is that Elijah was sent by God to the widow, with the intention that she would provide him with sustenance. And when the widow herself needed sustaining—after her son had died—her service to Elijah meant that he was available for her in her time of need. The story becomes richer the more we look at it. Elijah wasn’t in danger of starvation when God sent him to the widow; he was already being sustained by food delivered from ravens. Provision for Elijah was certain, yet God chose to involve others in His supernatural work. Could it be that God brings people into your life—not just for your sake or theirs, but to broaden the scope of His miraculous works?
Then, when the widow’s son died “with a belly full of miracle,” it wasn’t just to reveal a spiritual principle discussed before; it was to showcase the full magnitude of God’s glory. Yes, the boy died, but God used Elijah to bring him back to life. This miracle identified Elijah as a prophet of the one true God in a place where Baal was worshipped. God is willing to do anything to make His power known to others. My prayer this week is that you and I both make ourselves available as vehicles of His power.
As you reflect on this story, consider how your journey of recovery might be enriched by making yourself available to help others, just as the widow did. Sometimes, the act of sustaining others becomes the very thing that sustains us. Recovery is rarely a solo path; it’s often made possible through connection, community, and a willingness to be part of something greater than ourselves. May you find hope in being both sustained and sustaining, trusting that your story can reveal the power and glory that bring true healing.
